Here is a sample of G-lish Foundation’s products. Currently we are not selling online, although we hope this will change soon. You can buy recycled Bolgatanga Baskets through Trashy Bags in Accra at present.
Each basket is roughly made from 230+ recycled plastic “pure water” drinking sachets and about 1.7-2 yards of recycled scrap cloth. It takes 5 full days of labour to produce one basket, from the cutting of plastic and twisting of plastic, to the actual weaving of the basket.
While some would argue this is too labour intensive (and while that may be a fair argument in traditional economic circles), our mission is to create jobs in a place with very few opportunities even for highly educated graduates–a place where the average person earns less than US$10 a month.
G-lish Foundation saw the abundant skill-set in traditional Bolga basket makers in the region at a time when home was overflowing with saved pure water plastic rubbish we did not want to burn: light bulb moment.
